Privacy: figures entered into this calculator stay in your browser and are not sent to MoneyCalcs UK.

Enhanced maternity pay is determined by your employer's contract or maternity policy. MoneyCalcs UK only models the scheme information you enter and does not determine your contractual entitlement. Figures are gross estimates and are not employment, legal, tax or financial advice. Check your employer's policy and payroll calculation.

What is enhanced maternity pay?

Some employers offer contractual or occupational maternity pay that goes beyond the statutory minimum — for example a period of full pay, followed by a period of half pay.

These schemes vary widely between employers in both the amounts paid and the number of weeks covered. There is no single standard enhanced maternity pay scheme, which is why this calculator asks you to enter the stages set out in your own policy.

Is enhanced maternity pay the same as Statutory Maternity Pay?

No. Statutory Maternity Pay is a statutory payment for eligible employees, calculated using the statutory rules and weekly rates. Enhanced maternity pay is additional contractual pay provided under an employer's policy.

This calculator uses the same Statutory Maternity Pay engine as the UK Maternity Pay Calculator, then models your employer's scheme on top of it.

What does “full pay including SMP” mean?

It means the statutory maternity payment forms part of the stated full-pay amount rather than being added again on top. If full pay is £1,000 a week and £194.32 of that is Statutory Maternity Pay, the employer element is the remaining £805.68 — the total stays at £1,000.

What does “half pay plus SMP” mean?

Some policies provide an employer payment equal to half your normal pay and add Statutory Maternity Pay separately, so the weekly total is the sum of the two.

Some schemes cap the combined payment at your normal pay. Check your own policy wording and select the option that matches it in the scheme builder above.

Do I have to repay enhanced maternity pay?

Some contracts contain a return-to-work requirement that applies to the enhanced element of maternity pay. Whether anything is repayable depends entirely on that wording.

Statutory Maternity Pay itself is not repayable simply because someone does not return to work. Check your employment contract or maternity policy, and speak to your employer if the wording is unclear.

What if I receive a pay rise during maternity leave?

Pay rises can affect maternity pay, and the effect on Statutory Maternity Pay and on enhanced maternity pay can differ. Ask your employer or payroll team how a pay rise applies to your own maternity scheme. This version of the calculator does not model pay rises.

Gross pay only

Maternity pay is normally processed through payroll. Income Tax and National Insurance can therefore affect what reaches your bank account, so treat every figure here as a gross estimate.
